Austin is considered to the capital of live music in the United States. In the late 70's the live music scene in the area was shown nationwide on a popular weekly TV show. Since that time, the city has become known for struggling and well known artists alike. As well as televised live music, Austin hosts several well known music festivals every year. The themes range anywhere from Latin to popular folk music.

Others you wouldn't necessarily expect, for example, from April through the end of the year, live music is offered weekly at the Austin City Hall. Also, certain higher end food markets and markets offer weekly live entertainment.
If you are interested in art, there is always something going on in downtown Austin. There are art galleries as well as museums open to the public daily. Also, there is an open air artist's market open seven days a week to the public. It's a very unique place to shop. In addition to artwork, there are lots of handmade offerings to choose from.
